Warsaw, Poland....home away from home
From Wheres and whys..... in Warsaw, Poland on Nov 03 '04
Warsaw, Poland is my home away from home. I've been living here for quite a long period of time, but it certainly wasn't intentional. I moved here in November of 2004, went back to the States in May of 2005, moved back to Poland in October of 2005, and have been here ever since. Warsaw itself is a rebuilt city. After World War II, almost the entirety of Warsaw had to be rebuilt, so very little of the city is historic. The reconstruction effort was quite abrupt to allow people to move back to the city and sustain themselves, so what you see are several communist looking blocks of flats all over town.
There are a handful of places to go in Warsaw, but I would say that most everything worth seeing could be viewed in a two to three day period of time. There are several museums, the Old Town (which isn't actually old anymore since the war), the tourist district street of Nowy Swiat, the Palace of Culture, a couple of really nice parks, a couple of other palaces, and The Stadium.

Most things are relatively cheap here. Food and accommodations especially are very much on the cheap end. With buses, trams, and a metro line, public transportation is conveniently located throughout the city and is very easy to use. The main train station is located directly in the center of town, and a bus can take you directly from the airport to the center of the city in about half an hour. Taxis are VERY cheap in Warsaw.
Warsaw is not a "love at first sight" kind of city, but over time it tends to grow on you overall. If you intend to come to Poland to visit, I would highly recommend you read my upcoming story blogs on Krakow, Gdansk and Wroclaw, three cities much more worth the travel....
