Today we headed off early for our panoramic day (read here lots of driving). A heavy fog had settled in and was present for the entire day. At one point you couldn't see more than one car in front of the bus. This made our scenic drive a bit boring and an ideal time to catch up on some sleep with short napping.
Our first stop was at King Ludwig's castle at Neuschwanstein. This was only a photographic stop, which was not that clear anyway due to the fog. It did give time for a bit of souvenier buying and I bought a 500 piece puzzle of what the castle looks like on a clear day.
Cuckoo, Cuckoo...

Next stop was our lunch break at a small town called Lindau. This is located on Lake Constance, the largest freshwater lake in Germany. The city hall here had a bright fresco painted on it and the cobblestone streets and small shops made for a relaxed lunch break. This place gets quite warm in the summer and is known as the Riviera of Germany. As we walked along the shorefront I could just see all the beautiful people sitting in the cafes and looking out at the boats on the lake.
We had a short break after getting on the bus at the Birnau Basillica. This church was built and decorated during 1750-55. It is decorated in the Rococo style and was breathtaking to look at.

Anticipation was building as the next stop was at one of the Black forest Cuckoo clock shops. The place we stop at has a giant clock with moving figures outside. Inside we wander round and are amazed at the number of and different style of wall clocks available. Upstairs they are selling $6000 grand-father clocks which have amazing carving and craftsmanship.
One thing we had to do here was to go up to the cafe and have a slice of traditional Black Forest cake. Quite different to what we are used to, this cake was very light in texture with kirsch cherries and cream. Very light to eat but rich in flavour. As we travelled on, it was good to see that the fog was lifting (at 5:30pm!) and we get a chance to see some of the traditional houses of the area, and the dense forests of the area.

It was a short drive to our hotel where the tour group enjoyed a meal of mixed coloured lettuce, cucumber with saurkraut, fillet of cod with rice and shredded vegetables with a hollondaise sauce, and a vanilla flummery with cherry sauce for desert. We decide to make it an early night.
